Experience an unforgettable encounter with one of Patagonia’s most iconic marine species: the elephant seal. Operating from September to March, this exclusive full-day tour invites you to explore the remote coasts of Estancia San Lorenzo or Punta Ninfas, guided by a wildlife expert. With a low difficulty level and moderate physical requirements, this journey is perfect for nature lovers aged 12 and up. Travel in a private vehicle, enjoy light refreshments, and witness the grandeur of the southern giants lounging by the sea.
Your day begins with a comfortable pick-up from Puerto Madryn, setting off toward either Estancia San Lorenzo or Punta Ninfas—two remarkable locations known for their thriving elephant seal populations.
During the drive, your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights into the region’s natural history, wildlife, and marine life. At Estancia San Lorenzo, located within the Península Valdés protected area, you’ll have the opportunity to observe elephant seals in their natural habitat, surrounded by expansive coastal landscapes.
If your journey takes you to Punta Ninfas, prepare for a scenic hike down to the beach. The path can be steep and the terrain loose, but it rewards you with a breathtaking setting to quietly watch these massive marine mammals up close.
Throughout the day, you’ll travel in a private vehicle designed for comfort and flexibility. A light brunch with beverages will be served, along with snacks and refreshments to enjoy en route. After a day filled with wildlife encounters and stunning views, you’ll return to Puerto Madryn in the late afternoon.

Elephant seals can be present for extended periods, but the most dramatic breeding and haul-out activity is seasonal. September through early summer is particularly important for colony behavior in Peninsula Valdes.
Adult males can reach extraordinary size and are among the largest seals on Earth. Their size difference compared with females is one of the most striking features of the species.
Observation is from appropriate distances and authorized areas. The goal is to see natural behavior without entering the animals’ space or changing what they are doing.
Depending on the season, visitors may see resting, social interactions, males competing, females with pups or animals moving between beach and sea.
Yes. The private format and time dedicated to the colony can be valuable for photographers. A telephoto lens is strongly recommended so images can be made without approaching the animals.
Reducing noise and sudden movement minimizes disturbance and improves the chance of observing natural behavior for longer periods.
Expect exposed Patagonian coastal terrain with natural surfaces, wind and changing temperatures. Sturdy footwear and layered clothing are recommended.
Orcas are occasionally observed around Peninsula Valdes and are famous for specialized hunting behavior, but sightings are rare, highly seasonal and never guaranteed.
This is a more specialized and exclusive experience focused on elephant seals and deeper observation rather than covering many attractions quickly.
The peninsula protects key breeding and resting habitat for Southern elephant seals and supports long-term scientific observation of this major South Atlantic population.
