We’ll depart in the morning for the Protected Area of Peninsula Valdés, a UNESCO-appointed World Heritage Site in 1999. After an hour’s journey, we’ll arrive at the charming, eco-friendly village of Puerto Pirámides, where we’ll embark on a thrilling whale-watching boat tour. This tour will allow you to see Southern Right whales from June to December, and Southern sea lions and cormorants from January to March. Please note that between April and mid-June, no navigation tours will be available. Lunch (not included) will be scheduled in Puerto Piramides or Caleta Valdes.
Next, we’ll continue our trip to the south of the peninsula. Along the way, we’ll pass through wide plains, two big salt lakes – Salina Grande and Salina Chica – and past Punta Delgada, the southern tip of the peninsula. Finally, we’ll arrive at Punta Cantor to appreciate the beauty of the Atlantic coastline and the geological formation known as Caleta Valdés, a stunning ocean inlet. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to spot Southern elephant seals, the largest seals on the planet, on these beaches. If not, we’ll head to Punta Norte instead.
On our way back to Puerto Madryn, we’ll make a stop at the Visitor Center Carlos Ameghino, a compendium of the peninsula’s natural wealth. Along the journey, you’ll have good chances of spotting local wildlife such as guanacos, rheas, foxes, cavies, armadillos, and skunks.

Kindly note that the excursion is available year-round. Whale watching by boat is offered from mid-June to early December, while marine fauna watching by boat is available from the end of December to the end of March. Please be aware that there will be no boat navigation between April and mid-June.

The best period is during the Southern Right whale season, generally from mid-June to early December. Outside that period the land excursion can still operate, but the navigation may focus on other marine fauna or may not be available.
The navigation is a dedicated part of the day in Puerto Piramides and its exact duration can vary with the operator and sea conditions. Allow additional time for boarding, safety instructions and the transfer between the vehicle and the pier.
Boat departures depend on wind and sea conditions. If the navigation cannot operate safely, the local operator will advise the available alternative, rescheduling possibility or applicable refund for the cancelled component.
There is no single best position because whales can appear on either side and the crew may maneuver the vessel. Follow crew instructions and move only when permitted so everyone can enjoy safe views.
Yes. The excursion continues through Peninsula Valdes after Puerto Piramides, with chances to see elephant seals, sea lions, guanacos, rheas, foxes and other Patagonian wildlife depending on the season.
Dress in layers and bring a windproof outer layer even on sunny days. Temperatures on the water can feel significantly cooler than in Puerto Madryn, especially in the early morning.
Yes. The Gulf is often relatively sheltered, but sea conditions vary and sensitive travelers can still feel motion. If you are prone to seasickness, consider your usual preventive measures and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.
Yes. A camera with a moderate zoom and a fast shutter speed is useful because whales can surface unexpectedly. Keep equipment secure and protect it from spray.
The combination gives a much broader understanding of the UNESCO-listed ecosystem. You experience whales at sea and then continue through the steppe and Atlantic coast to look for other species in different habitats.
Yes, especially from July through October and around weekends or holidays. Boat capacity is limited and whale season is one of the busiest periods in Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes.
