The Folías is a semi-submerged fishing-vessel wreck off Playa Paraná, south of Puerto Madryn. A fire disabled the ship at sea in December 1980; it was towed toward the coast and ultimately remained heeled over in Golfo Nuevo. Today, part of the corroded structure can be seen from the beach, with visibility generally better around lower tide.
You do not need to swim or dive to see Folías. The safest independent visit is from shore with binoculars or a telephoto lens. The wreck lies roughly 300 meters (about 980 feet) offshore and should never be treated as a casual swimming target. Diving or snorkeling near it belongs with a licensed Puerto Madryn operator and a plan adapted to the day’s wind, tide, visibility and participant experience.

What was the Folías?
Folías was a steel fishing trawler. Local maritime accounts commonly describe it as 72 meters long, while diving references often list approximately 60 meters. That difference may reflect simplified dive-site measurements, vessel records or repeated secondary reporting. Unless an original registry is produced, editors should acknowledge the range instead of presenting one length as indisputable.
The ship was still relatively young when it lost operational capacity. Its working design—long hull, fishing equipment and internal compartments—later created both habitat and hazards after sinking.
What happened in December 1980?
A fire broke out while Folías was at sea in December 1980. The fishing vessel Lapataia towed the disabled ship toward Puerto Madryn. Accounts describe the effort to bring it close enough for assistance from the shore, but the damage and water ingress left the vessel unable to return to service.
Folías settled off Playa Paraná, heeled over onto its port side on a soft or clay seabed. Part of the starboard side and upper structure remained close enough to the surface to emerge visibly, especially as the tide falls. The wreck has changed over more than four decades through corrosion, storms and biological growth, so historical photographs should not be used as a precise guide to its present condition.
Why is the wreck still visible?
The vessel lies in relatively shallow coastal water and did not disappear into a deep offshore channel. Its tilted position leaves the highest parts near or above the surface. Tide height, wave action and viewing angle determine how much a visitor can distinguish from the beach.
The visible silhouette may look like a small cluster of metal from shore, but the vessel is much larger underwater. A long lens reveals more than the naked eye, while binoculars help identify the tilted hull without approaching it.

How to see Folías from Playa Paraná
Travel south from Puerto Madryn
Playa Paraná is on the southern coastal route beyond Punta Cuevas, Ecocentro and Playa Kaiser. It is close enough for a short drive but outside Puerto Madryn’s fully serviced urban beachfront. Road and beach-access arrangements can change with maintenance and municipal reorganization.
In August 2026, the municipality was reorganizing access and motorhome use at Playa Kaiser and Playa Paraná, including a protected emergency/service lane and clearer public-use space. Follow the current entrance, parking signs and any staff directions. Never block emergency access or create a new track across the coastal environment.
Choose a lower-tide viewing window
Lower tide generally exposes more of the structure, but exact visibility also depends on waves, glare and haze. Check an official local tide table, arrive with daylight and leave time to reposition along the established shore. Low tide is helpful for viewing; it is not automatic proof that swimming or diving conditions are safe.
Stay on the public shore
Use binoculars, a phone with optical zoom or a camera with a telephoto lens. Do not launch an improvised float, walk toward exposed metal or attempt to climb any part of the wreck. Even when the top looks close, the approach crosses cold open water.
Can you swim to the Folías?
No independent swim should be recommended. The roughly 300-meter distance is only one risk. Golfo Nuevo water is cold, wind can rise quickly, surface conditions can change on the return, and the wreck adds sharp metal, fishing line, entanglement and unstable sections.
Seasonal lifeguard coverage at Playa Paraná does not turn the wreck into a recreational swimming objective. A guard supervising a marked bathing area is not authorizing a long offshore crossing. Stay inside the indicated zone and treat the beach as unsupervised whenever no lifeguard is visibly on duty.

Snorkeling and scuba diving at Folías
The wreck is a recognized local dive site. Decades underwater have allowed algae, anemones, mollusks, crustaceans and fish to colonize the structure. That ecological interest is one reason experienced divers visit, but marine life does not make the metal stable or safe.
Book through a licensed local diving center. Ask:
- Whether Folías is actually scheduled or only one possible site.
- Whether access is from shore or by boat.
- What certification and recent experience are required.
- Whether the activity stays outside the wreck or includes any overhead environment.
- What thermal protection, surface support and insurance are included.
- What alternative applies if wind, visibility or tide makes the site unsuitable.

Is Folías an artificial reef?
In ecological terms, the submerged structure now functions as hard habitat in an area where such surfaces attract marine organisms. Calling it an “artificial reef” can describe its present biological role, but the ship was not originally placed as a planned reef project. It became habitat as the accidental wreck was colonized.
Do not remove metal, shells or living organisms. The wreck’s value is historical and ecological, and disturbing it can also expose visitors to sharp edges and legal issues.

The beach can also be combined with Punta Loma or Cerro Avanzado without turning the outing into a rushed checklist.
