Puerto Madryn’s name comes from Wales, but the city was not named after the ship that brought the first major group of Welsh settlers. The natural harbor was called Porth Madryn in honor of Love Jones-Parry, Baron of Madryn, whose family estate in Wales was associated with Madryn Castle. The clipper Mimosa later arrived in Golfo Nuevo on July 28, 1865, making the name inseparable from the Welsh settlement story.
Madryn Castle and Love Jones-Parry
Love Jones-Parry was one of the figures involved in evaluating Patagonia as a possible home for a Welsh-speaking colony. In 1862 he traveled with Lewis Jones to examine the region. His estate near the Llŷn Peninsula in northwestern Wales was known as Madryn, and the sheltered Patagonian landing place became Porth Madryn—“Madryn Port” in Welsh.
The title “castle” can mislead modern travelers. Madryn Castle referred to a Welsh country estate, not a fortress transported symbolically to Patagonia. The name connected the proposed colony to one of its promoters before a permanent town existed on the shore.
The Mimosa and the 1865 landing
The Mimosa sailed from Liverpool carrying 153 Welsh settlers and reached Golfo Nuevo on July 28, 1865. That date is commemorated as the beginning of the Welsh settlement in Chubut. The coast, however, offered limited fresh water and little immediate shelter. The settlers soon moved toward the Chubut River valley, where irrigation made agriculture possible.

Was Puerto Madryn founded in a single day?
July 28, 1865 is the city’s symbolic foundation date, but Puerto Madryn developed in stages. The landing created the historical association. A permanent port settlement grew later, especially after the railway linked the coast to the agricultural valley in the late nineteenth century. Port workers, railway employees and migrants from several countries then shaped a community far more diverse than the original Welsh group.

“Puerto Madryn” combines Spanish and Welsh history: Puerto translates the function, while Madryn preserves the Welsh place-name connection. You may also see Porth Madryn in Welsh contexts. The pronunciation used locally has naturally become part of Argentine Spanish.
When I help travelers connect coastal wildlife with the region’s human history, I recommend dedicating at least half a day to Punta Cuevas and the city, then a separate day to the Chubut Valley. Trying to compress the entire Welsh story into a quick photograph at the landing monument leaves out the landscape that made the colony viable.
