Eating seafood at Puerto Rawson
The harbor area is one of the logical places to look for seafood in the Lower Chubut Valley. Menus commonly feature local shrimp, hake, calamari, seafood empanadas, paella or casseroles, but availability changes. “Fresh” should not be interpreted as every species coming from that morning’s boats; ask the restaurant what is local and in season.
What to order
- Patagonian shrimp: sweet and delicate, served grilled, fried, in pasta or in empanadas.
- Hake: a mild local staple that works well simply grilled.
- Seafood casserole: a warming choice in cool or windy weather.
- Rabas: fried squid rings, ideal for sharing but not necessarily proof of local catch.

Commerson’s dolphin trips
Authorized boat trips depart through the river mouth in search of Commerson’s dolphins, known locally as toninas overas. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and departures depend on sea and wind conditions. Choose operators that brief passengers, use suitable safety equipment and follow wildlife-viewing rules.
These trips are separate from whale watching in Península Valdés. Commerson’s dolphins are smaller, fast-moving and associated with the open coastal waters off Rawson.
When to visit the port
Morning often offers clearer working-harbor activity, while lunch is best for seafood. Summer brings more visitors and restaurant availability; cooler months can feel quieter. Fishing schedules cannot be promised, and strong wind may alter both fleet operations and boat excursions.
In travel planning, I consider Puerto Rawson especially effective as a half-day combination: enough time to understand the harbor and eat well, without expecting a large list of formal attractions.
