Punta Loma is the closest protected sea lion colony to Puerto Madryn, approximately 16 to 17 kilometers (10 miles) south of the city. From cliff-top viewpoints, visitors can observe South American sea lions throughout the year, along with cormorants, gulls, terns and the coastal steppe of Golfo Nuevo. The reserve also has an interpretive native-flora trail, public restrooms, ranger infrastructure and an entrance fee.
The final approach includes about 14 kilometers of gravel road after Punta Cuevas. There is no scheduled public bus confirmed to the reserve. Drive, arrange a taxi/remís that will wait, or join a guided tour. Low tide usually provides the best view of sea lions on the exposed shore.

Is Punta Loma the oldest reserve in Chubut?
Punta Loma was created by Provincial Law 697 on September 29, 1967 and is one of the oldest protected natural areas in Chubut’s conservation system. Some tourism sources call it Argentina’s first nature reserve, but the most precise supported claim is that it was the first protected natural area in Chubut.
Its original purpose combined tourism with protection of the sea lion colony. Current management also covers native flora, birds, geology, visitor access and the broader habitat.
How to get to Punta Loma from Puerto Madryn
Self-drive
Follow Puerto Madryn’s coast south along Boulevard Almirante Brown toward Punta Cuevas, then continue on the coastal road. After the urban pavement, the route becomes gravel for roughly 14 kilometers before the reserve. The trip is short in distance but should not be rushed.
Drive slowly on loose gravel, leave extra space for braking and avoid sudden steering. Rain can create mud, while wind can blow dust across the road. Wildlife may cross. A standard car can usually make the trip when the road is open and dry, but current conditions matter more than vehicle type.
Taxi or remís
A taxi or remís can be practical for travelers without a car, but arrange the return in advance. Do not assume a vehicle will be waiting at this remote endpoint or that you can summon one with reliable mobile data. Confirm the total price, waiting time and entrance-fee arrangement before departure.

Cycling
The distance may look suitable for cycling, but gravel, dust, limited shoulders, strong wind and vehicle traffic make it a demanding outing. Use a capable bicycle, wear high-visibility clothing, carry repair equipment and water, and seek current local route advice. It is not a casual city-bike ride.
Opening hours and the best tide
Punta Loma operates year-round, but current standard hours are not consistently displayed across official pages. Chubut notices have used 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. as normal peak-period hours, while schedules may be shortened seasonally or extended for cruise traffic.
For wildlife viewing, low tide exposes more beach below the cliff and generally makes the sea lions easier to see.

When are the sea lions most active?
Punta Loma is a permanent colony, so sea lions can be seen in every month. Numbers, age groups and behavior vary with reproductive and molting cycles, tides, weather and time of day. No ethical operator can guarantee a particular interaction from the land viewpoint.
At low tide, more animals may be visible resting or moving across exposed substrate. In strong wind, they may be present but difficult to hear or photograph steadily.
