| Factor | Trelew (REL) | Puerto Madryn (PMY) | Practical winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport code | REL | PMY | Check the code before booking |
| To central Puerto Madryn | About 63 km; usually 45–60 minutes by road | About 7 km; usually 10–15 minutes by road | PMY |
| To Puerto Pirámides | About 160 km; allow roughly 2–2.5 hours | About 100 km; allow roughly 1.5 hours | PMY |
| Flight choice | More flights and domestic routes in the current schedule | Fewer flights, focused mainly on Buenos Aires | REL |
| Best for | Schedule flexibility and some Patagonia combinations | Fast arrival at a Puerto Madryn hotel | Depends on the full itinerary |
Flight networks and frequencies change. The airport comparison above was checked in August 2026; travelers should verify the exact timetable for their travel date.

When Puerto Madryn Airport is the better choice
Choose El Tehuelche Airport (PMY) when a suitable nonstop flight is available and Puerto Madryn is your first base. The short transfer is especially valuable after an evening arrival, for families with children, for travelers carrying outdoor equipment, or for anyone who wants to avoid adding another hour on the road after flying.
PMY can also be a sensible option when the first nights are in Puerto Pirámides. The village is approximately 100 km away, and a direct prearranged transfer avoids returning through central Puerto Madryn. However, there is no dependable public bus departing from the airport itself, so the ground plan should be confirmed before flying.
The compromise is frequency. As of August 2026, PMY’s scheduled nonstop service is concentrated on Buenos Aires, with fewer monthly departures than REL. A convenient airport does not help if the available flight forces a difficult connection or removes a full day from the itinerary.

When Trelew Airport is the better choice
Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport (REL) is the region’s broader air gateway. Current schedules show more Buenos Aires frequencies and additional domestic routes, although some Patagonia links are seasonal. This generally gives travelers more ways to protect an itinerary when arrival time, fare or onward connections matter.
REL is also useful when the trip includes Trelew, Gaiman, the MEF paleontology museum or Punta Tombo. In those cases, landing near Trelew may reduce backtracking. A rental car can be collected at the airport, or a shared or private transfer can take passengers directly to a hotel in Puerto Madryn.
The trade-off is the 63 km journey to Puerto Madryn. A private car normally takes around 45 to 60 minutes; a shared door-to-door transfer may take longer while other passengers are dropped off. This should be included when comparing an apparently cheaper REL flight with a PMY alternative.

Which airport is best for different Peninsula Valdés itineraries?
Staying in Puerto Madryn
PMY wins on convenience, provided that the flight time and fare are reasonable. REL remains a strong alternative when it offers a much better schedule or a safer connection from an international arrival in Buenos Aires.
Staying in Puerto Pirámides
PMY is geographically closer, but a direct transfer or rental car is important. Travelers relying on the bus must first reach Puerto Madryn’s bus terminal and then connect to the limited Puerto Pirámides service. From REL, the total road journey is longer and a direct transfer becomes even more valuable.
Combining Península Valdés with El Calafate or Ushuaia
Start by checking REL, because it may offer seasonal Patagonia links that avoid returning to Buenos Aires. Do not assume those flights operate every day or throughout the year. Build the itinerary around the actual date-specific schedule, not around a route that appears on a general airport map.
Visiting Punta Tombo or the Welsh settlements
REL is usually the more logical gateway. Trelew and Gaiman are close to the airport, while Punta Tombo lies south of the main Península Valdés circuit. Travelers can visit these places before moving north to Puerto Madryn instead of making a separate return journey.

Compare the complete cost, not only the airfare
When I help plan trips in this region, I compare the door-to-door result. An airport that saves money on the ticket may require a longer private transfer, an extra hotel night or a connection with very little recovery time. The useful comparison is the cost and time from the original departure point to the hotel—not just the number shown by the airline.
Before purchasing, check:
- the Buenos Aires departure airport: Aeroparque (AEP) or Ezeiza (EZE);
- the arrival code: REL for Trelew or PMY for Puerto Madryn;
- checked-baggage allowances on every segment;
- the cost of a shared or private ground transfer;
- whether the flight arrives after the operating hours of visitor sites;
- the consequences of a delay for a whale-watching or wildlife tour the next morning.
Our practical recommendation
If both flights are similarly priced and timed, choose PMY for a Puerto Madryn or Puerto Pirámides stay. Choose REL when it offers a substantially better schedule, a useful Patagonia connection, or a route that includes Trelew, Gaiman or Punta Tombo.
Whichever airport you choose, reserve the ground transfer at the same time as the flight.
If you prefer to combine airport transfers with the main wildlife excursions, review the Península Valdés Basic Pass and ask us to confirm which airport best matches your dates.
