Medical Care and Emergency Services for Visitors to Puerto Madryn

For a medical emergency in Puerto Madryn, call 107 for the public ambulance service or go to the 24-hour emergency department at Hospital Zonal Dr. Andrés Ísola, at the corner of Roberto Gómez and Agustín Pujol. For police call 101, for firefighters 100, and for Civil Protection 103. If the situation involves immediate danger and you cannot reach the specialized line, call 911.

Puerto Madryn is the main service center for travelers visiting Península Valdés. It has a public hospital, neighborhood health centers, pharmacies and private medical providers. Puerto Pirámides has a smaller rural hospital, but serious cases may require assessment or transfer to Puerto Madryn. Save the numbers below offline before leaving the city because mobile coverage is unreliable on the peninsula.

Where to go for emergency care in Puerto Madryn

Hospital Zonal Dr. Andrés Ísola

The public Hospital Zonal Dr. Andrés Ísola is the principal emergency reference in Puerto Madryn. Its official guidance states that the emergency service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Visitors may call 107 for an ambulance or enter the emergency department at Roberto Gómez and Agustín Pujol.

The emergency department uses triage, so patients are assessed according to clinical urgency rather than arrival order. Bring your passport or identification, travel-insurance details, a list of medications and allergies, and a contact number. Do not delay an emergency call while looking for documents.

Private medical care

Puerto Madryn also has private clinics, doctors, dentists and diagnostic services. For a non-life-threatening problem, first call the assistance number on your travel-insurance policy: the insurer may direct you to a contracted provider or arrange a telemedicine assessment. Provider networks, opening hours and authorizations change, so confirm them on the day rather than relying on an old directory.

If you choose a private provider, ask whether payment is required upfront, which cards are accepted and what documentation will be issued for reimbursement. Keep the medical report, prescription, invoice and proof of payment.

What to do for urgent but non-life-threatening problems

For a problem that needs prompt attention but does not appear life-threatening, the appropriate route depends on severity, time of day and insurance coverage. You can call your insurer, ask your accommodation to identify a currently open provider, visit a pharmacy for directions to an on-duty pharmacy, or go to the hospital emergency department if the condition cannot wait.

Pharmacy hours vary. Argentina uses a rotating farmacia de turno system for after-hours coverage. Ask at any pharmacy, your hotel reception or the Istmo Carlos Ameghino Visitor Center for the current duty pharmacy. A pharmacy can help you locate care, but a pharmacist is not a substitute for emergency assessment.

Medical help in Puerto Pirámides and Península Valdés

The Hospital Rural de Puerto Pirámides is on Avenida de las Ballenas and is the local health facility for the village. It is useful for initial assessment, but Puerto Pirámides is a small settlement. Advanced imaging, specialist treatment or hospital admission may require coordination with Puerto Madryn.

Beyond Puerto Pirámides, the protected area is remote. The official Península Valdés administration warns that there is no mobile signal on internal routes. Rangers at the visitor sites have communications equipment and can request assistance. If an incident occurs near Punta Norte, Caleta Valdés, Isla de los Pájaros or Punta Pirámide, tell the nearest ranger immediately and give the name of the operational unit, road and closest landmark.

How to describe your location in an emergency

Emergency response is faster when the location is precise. In Puerto Madryn, give the street name, number or nearest cross streets, building or hotel name, floor and room when relevant. On the peninsula, give the named visitor site, route, direction of travel, distance from the last known point and vehicle details.

A useful Spanish phrase is: “Necesito una ambulancia. Estamos en…” (“I need an ambulance. We are at…”). Then state what happened, how many people are affected, whether anyone is unconscious or bleeding, and a callback number. Stay on the line and follow the operator’s instructions.

Travel insurance and prescriptions

Travel insurance is strongly recommended, especially for visitors planning boat trips, snorkeling, diving or long road excursions. Before departure, check the emergency-assistance number, coverage for pre-existing conditions, adventure activities, medical evacuation and trip interruption. Save the policy offline and share a copy with a travel companion.

Carry prescription medicines in original labeled packaging and bring enough for the journey plus a reasonable delay. A written prescription or physician’s letter is useful for controlled or injectable medication. Keep essential medicine in hand luggage, not only in checked baggage, and consider temperature requirements before a full-day excursion.

A practical medical checklist before your trip

  • Save 107, 100, 101, 103 and 911 in your phone.
  • Save the address of Hospital Dr. Andrés Ísola and the Puerto Pirámides Rural Hospital number.
  • Download your insurance certificate and assistance number.
  • Record allergies, regular medication, blood type if known and an emergency contact.
  • Pack sunscreen, prescribed medication and a basic first-aid kit; our Península Valdés packing guide covers the climate essentials.
  • Do not leave medication exposed to heat in a parked vehicle.
  • For remote drives, carry water and do not depend on mobile data.

My recommendation for visitors

After many years organizing trips in Patagonia, my advice is simple: treat Puerto Madryn as your medical-service base and the peninsula as a remote excursion. Most travelers will never need these numbers, but saving them before departure is much more useful than searching for them with weak signal after something happens.

For a life-threatening situation, call emergency services first. This guide helps with preparation and navigation; it does not diagnose symptoms or replace professional medical advice.
