The protected area itself is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but its public visitor points operate from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The current official tariff page lists credit card, debit card and QR payment; it does not list cash as an accepted method for the entrance fee.

Is the entrance fee per person or per vehicle?
The visitor ticket is per person and is valid for one day. The official 2026 schedule also lists a separate vehicle charge for tourism-related vehicles. The official wording says these charges apply to travel-agency vehicles, taxis, remises and rental cars.
If you are taking a guided excursion, ask whether both the passenger admission and any applicable vehicle charge are already included. If you are driving a rental car, keep the rental agreement available and confirm the total payable at the checkpoint because tariff rules can be updated.
Where do you pay the Península Valdés entrance fee?
Road visitors pay at the El Desempeño control point on Provincial Route 2, before reaching the Istmo Carlos Ameghino Visitor Center and Puerto Pirámides. This is the access route used by travelers coming from Puerto Madryn, Trelew and either airport.
Keep the receipt for the day. The entrance fee covers access to the protected area; it does not automatically include whale-watching trips, meals, private reserves, guided tours or other paid activities.

Which payment methods are accepted?
The current official page lists:

Cash is not listed on the current official tariff page. Travelers should therefore carry a physical payment card and avoid relying only on a phone-based QR wallet. QR systems can require an Argentine app or a live data connection, while foreign-card authorization can occasionally fail for reasons outside the reserve’s control.
I recommend traveling with two payment options whenever possible: a primary card and a second card from a different network or bank. Also keep the passport or document needed to prove nationality, age, Chubut residence or reduced-rate eligibility.

Opening hours: protected-area access vs. visitor sites
The distinction matters. The Administration of Península Valdés states that access to the protected area is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. However, the main public visitor sites—Punta Norte, Caleta Valdés, Isla de los Pájaros, the Istmo Ameghino Visitor Center and Punta Pirámides—are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Arriving outside those hours does not create a useful wildlife-visiting opportunity. Facilities and staffed viewing areas may be closed, and driving after dark adds unnecessary risk because wildlife can cross the road. Plan to enter early enough to complete the route in daylight and reach the selected observation point while it is open.
Does the 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. schedule change by season?
The official recommendation page currently gives 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. for public points and operational units. Temporary restrictions can still occur because of road conditions, conservation work, weather or wildlife management.

What documents should you bring?
Bring the original document that supports your tariff category. A foreign visitor should have a passport or internationally recognized identity document. Argentine citizens and Chubut residents need proof of citizenship or residence, while retirees, pensioners, students, visitors with disabilities and veterans should carry the corresponding valid credential.
Do not assume that a verbal explanation, a photo with unreadable details or a hotel confirmation will qualify for a reduced rate. The official schedule expressly requires proof for Argentine and Chubut-resident categories.
Can a tour include the entrance fee?
Yes. Some tours and packages include the reserve ticket, while others show it as an optional or excluded item. Read the inclusion list rather than assuming. A prearranged option can be practical for international travelers because the operator coordinates admission with the day’s excursion.
